Most businesses pay between $500 and $5,000 per month for ongoing SEO. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, agencies averaged $3,209/month, freelancers $1,349/month, and the average hourly rate was $111. UK retainers usually run about £500 to £3,000/month for small and mid-sized businesses. Under $500/month rarely includes real content or link building.
If you've asked three SEO agencies for a quote, you've probably had three wildly different answers. One says $400 a month, one says $2,500, one won't give you a number until you've sat through a 45-minute "discovery call."
That's not because SEO pricing is a mystery. It's because "SEO" covers everything from someone tweaking your meta descriptions once a month to a full team rebuilding your site architecture, publishing content weekly and earning links from industry publications.
This guide breaks down what SEO actually costs in 2026 in both the US and UK, what you get at each price point, and how to tell whether a quote is fair. We'll also show you our own pricing, because we think every agency should.
SEO pricing at a glance
The best public data on SEO pricing comes from Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO service providers. Here's what they found:
A few other findings worth knowing:
- 42.8% of providers charge between $501 and $2,000 per month.
- 31.2% charge more than $2,000 per month.
- Providers who serve clients worldwide charge more than local-only providers: $3,474/month on average versus $1,557.
- In the US and Canada, 79.1% of providers charge at least $1,001 a month.
- India was the big outlier: 76% of providers there charge $1,000 a month or less.
The three ways SEO is priced
1. Monthly retainers (most common)
You pay a fixed monthly fee and the agency does an agreed set of work every month: technical fixes, content, links and reporting. This is how most ongoing SEO is sold because SEO compounds. The work you do in month 2 is still paying off in month 12.
Typical range: $500 to $5,000+ per month for small and mid-sized businesses. Enterprise retainers can run $10,000 to $50,000 per month.
2. Hourly consulting
Good for businesses with an in-house team that needs expert direction rather than hands-on execution.
Typical range: $75 to $200 per hour in the US (90% of providers in the Ahrefs survey charge $150 or less). Consultancies average higher, around $171 per hour.
3. One-off projects
A fixed fee for a defined deliverable, like a technical audit, a site migration, a keyword strategy or a content plan.
Typical range: $1,000 to $10,000 per project. The most common bracket in the Ahrefs data was $2,501 to $5,000.
What you get at each price point
Here's the honest version, based on what we see when clients come to us from other providers.
| Monthly budget | What's realistic | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Under $500 | Google Business Profile management, citations, basic on-page fixes, a thin monthly report. Rarely real content or links. | Single-location service businesses in small towns |
| $500–$1,500 | Technical fixes, on-page optimisation, 2–4 pieces of content a month, some link building, proper reporting. | Local businesses, small ecommerce stores, B2B niches |
| $1,500–$5,000 | Everything above plus more content, digital PR, conversion work and a dedicated strategist. | Growing ecommerce brands, multi-location businesses, competitive B2B |
| $5,000+ | Large content programmes, enterprise technical SEO, international SEO and multiple markets. | National brands, large ecommerce, SaaS |
How much does SEO cost in the UK?
UK pricing follows a similar shape to the US. Published 2026 UK pricing guides put typical monthly retainers at:
| UK business size | Typical monthly retainer |
|---|---|
| Local business / startup | £500–£1,200 |
| Growing SME | £1,500–£3,000 |
| Mid-market B2B | £2,500–£5,000 |
| Enterprise | £5,000–£20,000+ |
UK freelancers commonly charge £200 to £400 a day at junior level and £400 to £700 at mid-level, while senior specialists charge £700+. Freelance marketplace Malt puts the average UK SEO consultant at about £418 a day. London agencies typically charge 30% to 50% more than providers elsewhere in the UK, and regulated sectors carry a premium too.
Agencies with offshore or nearshore delivery teams, including us, can usually offer the same scope for less because labour costs are lower.
What actually drives the price
Two businesses can get very different quotes for the same "SEO package." These are the biggest factors:
- How competitive your market is. Ranking a plumber in a small town is a different job from ranking a CBD brand nationally against companies with ten years of content and thousands of links.
- Your site's size and condition. A 20-page brochure site and a 5,000-product Shopify store with duplicate content problems need different amounts of work.
- How much content and link building is included. These are the expensive parts because they take the most skilled hours. They're also the parts that move rankings.
- Local vs national vs international. More markets means more pages, more keyword research and often more languages.
- Restricted industries. Categories like CBD, supplements and finance face stricter quality standards from Google (it calls them "Your Money or Your Life" topics) and fewer willing link sources. That means more expert work per page.
- Who's doing the work. A senior London agency, a freelancer and a team with offshore delivery will price the same scope very differently.
Red flags in an SEO quote
If a quote promises "page one in 30 days" or "guaranteed #1 rankings," walk away. Nobody controls Google's algorithm, and Google itself warns against anyone who guarantees rankings.
Other warning signs:
- No named deliverables. You should know how many pages, posts and links you're getting each month, or at least what the plan is.
- "500 backlinks for $99." Bulk links from spam directories and private blog networks can get your site penalised. The cleanup costs more than the links did.
- Reports that only show rankings. Rankings are a means to an end. A good report shows organic traffic, leads or revenue.
- Long lock-in contracts with no exit clause. SEO needs time, but you shouldn't be trapped with someone who isn't delivering.
- They won't give you access. You should own your Google Search Console, Analytics and any content created for you.

Book a Free CallIs SEO worth the money?
Here's one data point from our own client work. A craft cannabinoid brand, in a category where Google advertising is heavily restricted, grew monthly organic revenue from $11,344 to $47,503 over 18 months. That's $814K in organic revenue with zero paid advertising. Year over year, organic revenue went from $21.6K to $50.2K a month. Read the full case study.
Not every business will see numbers like that, and results depend heavily on your market and starting point. But that's the economics of SEO: the cost is roughly fixed, while the traffic it builds keeps compounding. Compare that with paid ads, where the traffic stops the day you stop paying. We break down that comparison in SEO vs PPC: which should you invest in first?
How to budget for SEO
If you're setting a budget for the first time:
- Work out what a customer is worth. If your average customer is worth $2,000 in lifetime value, you need one extra customer a month for a $1,200 retainer to pay for itself. Two or more is profit.
- Plan for 6 to 12 months. Most sites see ranking movement within 3 months and meaningful revenue between months 4 and 9. Read how long SEO really takes for a month-by-month timeline.
- Don't spread too thin. $1,000 a month focused on one market and one product line beats $1,000 a month spread across everything.
- Measure revenue, not rankings. Set up conversion tracking in Google Analytics 4 before you start so you can see what SEO is actually earning.

Frequently asked questions
How much does SEO cost per month?
Most small and mid-sized businesses pay $500 to $5,000 per month for SEO. The most common retainer bracket in Ahrefs' provider survey was $501 to $1,000 per month, but agencies averaged $3,209 per month. Hello Bleu's full-service package is $1,199 per month.
How much does SEO cost in the UK?
UK SEO retainers typically run £500 to £1,200 per month for a local business, £1,500 to £3,000 for a growing SME, and £5,000 to £20,000+ for enterprise. London agencies tend to charge 30% to 50% more. The average UK SEO consultant day rate is about £418, according to Malt.
How much does a one-off SEO audit cost?
A standalone technical SEO audit usually costs between $500 and $5,000 depending on site size and depth. Very large ecommerce sites with tens of thousands of URLs can cost more. Many agencies, including Hello Bleu, include an audit in the first month of a retainer.
Is $500 a month enough for SEO?
$500 a month can cover local SEO basics for a single-location business in a low-competition area, such as a Google Business Profile, citations and a few on-page fixes. It is rarely enough for content and link building in a competitive market or for an ecommerce store.
Why is SEO so expensive?
Good SEO is skilled labour across several disciplines (technical development, content writing, digital PR and analytics) done consistently over months. Most of the cost is people's time. Cheap SEO usually cuts the expensive parts, content and links, which are the parts that move rankings.
Should I pay for SEO or Google Ads?
Google Ads buys traffic immediately but stops the day you stop paying. SEO takes 4 to 12 months to build but keeps compounding. Most businesses do best running both, using ads for immediate revenue while SEO builds a cheaper long-term channel.
