AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of structuring your content so that answer engines, like Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Alexa and Siri, pick it as the direct answer to a question. Where SEO aims to rank a link, AEO aims to be the answer. It relies on question-led headings, concise answer-first paragraphs, structured data and strong brand authority.
Search used to be ten blue links. Now, for a growing share of questions, the first thing people see is an answer: a Google AI Overview, a featured snippet, a ChatGPT response, or Siri reading something out loud.
Google says AI Overviews now reach more than 2 billion users a month (Sundar Pichai, July 2025). OpenAI says ChatGPT has 800 million weekly users (Sam Altman, October 2025). When your potential customer asks one of these tools a question, the only position that matters is being the source the answer comes from.
That's what answer engine optimization is about.
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring and positioning your content so that answer engines select it as the direct answer to a user's question.
An "answer engine" is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than a list of links:
- Google: AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes
- AI assistants: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot
- Voice assistants: Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant
Traditional SEO tries to get your page ranked so someone clicks. AEO tries to get your content quoted, ideally with your brand name and a link attached.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
You'll hear three acronyms thrown around. Here's how they fit together:
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be selected as the direct answer | Be cited and recommended in AI-generated responses |
| Where | Google and Bing organic results | Featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, AI Mode |
| Success metric | Rankings, clicks, organic revenue | Snippet and answer ownership | Brand mentions and citations, share of voice |
| Key tactics | Technical health, content, links | Question-led structure, concise answers, schema | Entity clarity, third-party mentions, original data |
They're layers, not alternatives. SEO is the foundation. AI systems still lean heavily on pages that rank well in traditional search. AEO and GEO are how you make that ranking content easy for machines to extract, trust and attribute to you. We go deeper on the GEO side in how to get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT.
How answer engines choose their answers
No AI company publishes its exact selection criteria, but the patterns are consistent across platforms:
- Relevance to the exact question. Content that directly addresses the question, in the same words people use.
- Extractability. A clear, self-contained answer near the top of a section is easier to quote than one buried in paragraph six.
- Authority and trust. Established sites, named expert authors, citations and consistent information across the web.
- Freshness. Especially for prices, laws, statistics and anything time-sensitive.
- Consensus. If many trusted sources say the same thing, answer engines are confident repeating it. If your brand is mentioned across many sources, it's more likely to appear in recommendations.
9 AEO tactics that work
1. Lead every section with the answer
Write like a good journalist: answer first, then explain. A 40 to 60 word direct answer at the top of a page or section is the ideal length for featured snippets and AI extraction. Every article on this blog opens with a "Quick answer" box for exactly this reason.
2. Use the question as the heading
If people search "how much does SEO cost?", your H2 should be "How much does SEO cost?", not "Pricing considerations." Question-led headings map your content directly to the queries answer engines are resolving.
3. Build a proper FAQ section
Collect the real questions customers ask (from sales calls, support tickets, "People also ask" boxes and Reddit) and answer each in two to four sentences. Mark them up with FAQPage schema.
4. Use lists and tables for structured answers
Steps, comparisons, pricing tiers and specs are far easier for answer engines to lift when they're in an ordered list or a table than when they're buried in prose.
5. Add structured data
Use schema.org markup that matches the content: Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, Service, Organization and LocalBusiness. It removes ambiguity about what your page is and who's behind it.
6. Make your entity unmistakable
Answer engines need to know exactly who you are. Keep your business name, description, services and locations consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and press mentions. A clear "About" page and Organization schema with sameAs links to your profiles help connect the dots.
7. Publish facts nobody else has
Original data, such as survey results, case study numbers and pricing benchmarks, is cited far more often than rewritten common knowledge. When we share client results, like a cannabinoid brand growing monthly organic revenue from $11,344 to $47,503, that's a fact an answer engine can only get from us.
8. Keep it current
Put a visible "last updated" date on content and actually update it. For time-sensitive topics like regulations, prices or platform policies, stale content gets replaced by fresher sources quickly.
9. Earn mentions off your own site
Answer engines weigh what other sites say about you. Reviews, directory listings, guest articles, podcast appearances, Reddit discussions and industry roundups all build the consensus that gets your brand named in answers.

Here's a before and after for a typical service page section.
Before:
Our team has years of experience in the industry and we offer a range of flexible pricing options designed to suit businesses of all sizes, so get in touch to discuss your needs.
After:
How much does SEO cost? Most small businesses pay $500 to $5,000 per month for SEO. Hello Bleu's full-service SEO package is $1,199 per month and includes technical fixes, content, link building and monthly reporting.
The second version answers the question in two sentences, includes specific numbers and names the brand. It's exactly what an answer engine is looking for. (We wrote a full guide on SEO pricing using this approach.)
Does AEO mean fewer clicks?
Sometimes, yes. If an AI Overview fully answers "what time does the post office close," nobody clicks through. But for commercial questions, like which agency to hire, which product to buy or how much something costs, being the cited source puts your brand in front of the buyer at the moment they're deciding. A click from an AI answer is often a warmer lead than a click from a regular search result, because the person has already been told you're relevant.
And the alternative, not being the answer, means your competitor is.
How to get started with AEO
- List the 20 to 50 questions your customers ask most before they buy.
- Check who currently owns the answer in Google (featured snippets and AI Overviews), ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Restructure your existing pages with question headings, answer-first paragraphs, FAQs and schema.
- Create new content for important questions you don't answer yet.
- Build off-site mentions through directories, reviews, guest content and PR.
- Track snippet ownership, AI citations and AI referral traffic monthly.

Frequently asked questions
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization (answer engine optimisation in UK English). It's the practice of optimising content so that search engines and AI assistants use it as the direct answer to a user's question.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO. Answer engines still pull most of their information from pages that rank well in traditional search, so technical SEO, quality content and backlinks remain the foundation. AEO adds a layer on top focused on formatting, structured data and authority signals that make your content easy to extract and quote.
What's the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO focuses on being selected as the direct answer to specific questions, in featured snippets, AI Overviews and voice results. GEO (generative engine optimization) focuses more broadly on how your brand is represented and cited in AI-generated responses from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, including recommendations and comparisons. In practice the tactics overlap heavily and most agencies treat them together.
How do I measure AEO success?
Track featured snippet and AI Overview appearances for your target questions, citations of your domain in AI answers, brand mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity responses to category prompts, and assisted conversions from AI referral traffic in GA4. Many SEO platforms now include AI visibility tracking.
How long does AEO take to work?
Formatting changes like adding direct answers and FAQ sections can affect featured snippets within weeks of being re-crawled. Becoming a regularly cited source in AI answers usually takes several months, because it depends on your overall authority and on mentions across third-party sites.
Does schema markup help AEO?
Yes. Structured data like FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Product and Organization schema helps search engines and AI systems understand what your content is about and who published it. Schema alone won't make you the answer, but it makes your content easier to parse and attribute.
