Dispensary SEO for when the ad platforms say no.
Licensed dispensaries can't buy their way onto Google or Instagram, so maps, organic search and listings do the heavy lifting. Customers search for a store near them, scan the menu, check the deals and drive over. We make sure your store and your menu are what they find, inside your state's advertising rules.
What works
- Rank each licensed storefront in Google Maps
- Publish an indexable menu, deals page and location pages
- Build Leafly and Weedmaps listings and earn reviews
- Email customers who opted in and confirmed they're 21+
What doesn't
- Run Google Ads or Meta ads promoting THC products
- List a delivery-only operation as a Maps service area
- Make health claims your state doesn't allow
- Use cartoons, candy imagery or anything aimed at under-21s
Dispensary SEO is organic search marketing for licensed cannabis retailers. Because Google Ads and Meta don't run ads that promote THC products, it carries most of the acquisition load: a Business Profile for each storefront, a menu search engines can read, location pages, Leafly and Weedmaps listings and an age gate that doesn't block crawlers.
Where a dispensary can actually show up.
Channel by channel, for a licensed adult-use retailer. Platform policies change and state rules differ, so we check yours before anything goes live.
| Channel | Google Ads | Meta ads | Your site and Maps | SMS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| THC products | Recreational drugs policy bars it | THC promotion prohibited | Allowed, within state ad rules | Twilio bans cannabis senders |
| Hemp CBD topicals | Certified, CA, CO and PR only | LegitScript plus Meta approval | Allowed, within state rules | Twilio bans CBD too |
| Education and how-to | Drug how-to ads barred | CBD education, nothing for sale | Your strongest organic asset | Same sender ban applies |

Compliance first, then content.
In this category, a ranking you lose to a regulator's letter isn't worth having. So the rules come before the copy.
1. Map your state's rules
Every state writes its own. California requires the licensee's license number on advertising and limits placements to audiences at least 71.6% likely to be 21 or older. Michigan sets the line at no more than 30% under 21 and bars most health claims. Your compliance lead signs off on what we publish.
2. Age-gate without hiding from Google
Google treats legally required age gates as an exception to its interstitial guidance, but warns against redirecting every URL to a single gate page, because then that page is all Googlebot can fetch. We keep the gate as an overlay on the real page, or verify Googlebot and serve it the content, as Google recommends.
3. Make the menu readable
Most dispensaries run a menu from Dutchie, Jane or Leafly inside an iframe. Google says it tries to treat iframed content as part of your page but doesn't promise it. We add crawlable category pages around the embed, or move to an integration that renders the menu on your own domain.
4. Get consent before contact
Email lists built from opt-ins with age confirmation, with the consent recorded. SMS needs extra care: Twilio, for example, prohibits cannabis and CBD businesses from messaging on its US network regardless of state legality, so check your provider's rules before you build a text club.
Why dispensary SEO is its own job
Standard local SEO advice assumes you can run ads, text customers and list anywhere. You can't, so the organic work has to be sharper.
No storefront, no service area
Google's Business Profile guidelines say businesses selling products that need a minimum age, including cannabis, can't be listed as service-area businesses without a storefront. Each licensed shop needs its own accurate profile, and delivery has to be explained elsewhere.
- One profile per licensed storefront, real hours and categories
- Delivery zones on your site, never a fake address
The menu lives on someone else's server
Embedded menus often send product pages, and the ranking value they earn, to a vendor's domain. Searches like "blue dream near me" or "live resin carts [city]" then land on a platform page, not yours.
- Crawlable category pages on your domain
- Check where product URLs actually resolve
Leafly and Weedmaps rank for your name
Marketplace listings often sit beside or above your own site for your store name. You can't remove them, but you can make them accurate and make your site the better answer.
- Hours, address and menus consistent everywhere
- Reviews answered on every platform
Age gates that lock out crawlers
A gate that redirects every visitor to one verification URL hides the whole site from search. It's the most expensive technical mistake we see in this category, and one of the quickest to fix.
- Overlay gates that leave content in the page
- Googlebot verified and served the real page
Every state writes its own rulebook
Multi-state operators need location content that differs because the law does: audience thresholds, license number display, what counts as appealing to minors. California's regulations, for example, ban cartoons and candy-like imagery in cannabis ads.
- A rules sheet per state before content starts
- Location pages reviewed by your compliance lead
Products change every week
Strains, drops and deals rotate constantly. Thousands of short-lived product URLs can waste crawl attention and create dead pages, while stable category and brand pages build ranking value over time.
- Evergreen category, strain and brand pages
- Expired deals redirected, not left as 404s
What we do for dispensaries
One retainer, built for a category where most paid channels are closed.
Storefront Business Profiles
A profile for each licensed location with the right categories, hours, photos, products shown within Google's content rules, and steady review requests. Posts kept informational: Google's Maps content policy restricts purchase links and promotional offers for regulated goods.
Menu indexability
A technical review of how your Dutchie, Jane, Leafly or other menu renders to search engines, then crawlable category and brand pages on your domain so menu searches land with you.
Location and neighbourhood pages
One page per store with parking, hours, nearby landmarks, the services offered there and the staff picks that location stocks. No near-identical city pages for towns you don't have a license in.
Leafly and Weedmaps listings
Listings kept accurate and in sync with your site and Business Profile, with reviews answered on each, because many customers check the marketplace before they visit.
Compliant content
Guides to product types, consumption methods, first-visit tips and local rules, written without health or therapeutic claims and checked against your state's advertising rules before publishing.
Tracking that respects the rules
Calls, direction requests, menu views and order clicks tracked by store and page. Plus AI search visibility, so you know how ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews answer "dispensary near me" questions in your area.
SEO, marketplaces or your own list?
With paid ads mostly off the table, these are the three channels most dispensaries lean on.
| SEO | Leafly and Weedmaps | Email and SMS | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Monthly retainer or in-house time | Listing and promotion packages set by each marketplace | Software fees per contact or send |
| What you own | Your pages, rankings and reviews | A listing the marketplace controls | The list, if consent is recorded properly |
| Platform rules | Google's guidelines plus your state's ad rules | Each marketplace's terms plus state rules | Provider bans, especially on SMS |
| Best for | "Near me" and menu searches | Shoppers comparing several stores | Bringing regulars back for drops and deals |
| Weak spot | Takes months in competitive metros | Puts competitors one tap away | Only reaches people who already know you |
If you also run a brand or need help across channels, see our cannabis marketing agency page.
Your first 90 days
The first 90 days, for a single store or a small group. Competitive metros take longer. Here's what drives SEO timelines.

Fix and build
Age gate and menu indexing fixes, location pages rebuilt with real store detail, crawlable category pages around the menu, and a review request routine for your budtenders.
Content and links
Compliant education content, local links from events, press and community partners where your state allows them, email capture with age confirmation, and the first report by store.
Organic revenue, zero paid ads.
Our SEO retainer is $1,199 a month, with the same deliverables listed on our SEO packages page. We haven't published dispensary SEO results. The closest proof we have sits in the same category: a craft cannabinoid brand selling hemp-derived products online, not a licensed dispensary, where organic search had to do the work that ads weren't allowed to.
Monthly organic revenue
A craft cannabinoid brand, over 18 months, with $814K in total organic revenue and organic conversions up 478%.

How much does SEO cost for a dispensary?
Dispensary SEO with us costs $1,199 a month, the price shown on our packages page. It covers technical work, storefront profiles, location and menu pages, listings, content and reporting. Multi-state operators with many locations usually need more, and we'll scope that honestly. Because THC ads are off Google and Meta, SEO tends to be a bigger share of a dispensary's budget than it is for most retailers.
How long does dispensary SEO take?
Fixing a crawl-blocking age gate or a broken Business Profile can move results within weeks. Ranking for competitive "dispensary near me" searches in a crowded metro usually takes several months of steady work. Smaller towns with fewer licensed stores move faster. We'll show you where you stand on the first call.
Can a dispensary advertise on Google or Instagram?
Not for THC products. Google Ads doesn't allow ads for substances that alter mental state for recreation, and Meta prohibits ads promoting THC products. Google does allow topical hemp CBD with 0.3% THC or less, only for certified advertisers targeting California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. That's why organic search, maps and listings carry most of the load.
Will an age gate hurt our rankings?
It can if it's built badly. Google exempts legally required age gates from its interstitial guidance, but a gate that redirects every URL to one page leaves Googlebot seeing only that page. An overlay that keeps the content underneath, or serving verified Googlebot the page as Google suggests, keeps you compliant and indexable.
Is our embedded Dutchie or Jane menu hurting SEO?
Possibly. Google says it tries to index iframed content as part of the page that embeds it, but doesn't promise to. If product pages resolve on the vendor's domain, the ranking value goes there too. We test how your menu renders, then add crawlable category pages or move you to an on-domain integration if your provider offers one.
Can you guarantee a top-three spot in Google Maps?
No. Nobody controls Google's results, and map rankings depend heavily on how close a searcher is to each store. We commit to the monthly work, clear reporting and tracking calls, directions and order clicks by location, and we'll tell you which stores have the best realistic chance of moving first.
